The dilemma: what to wear when working at home

Working at home

So this tweet caught my eye:

What’s appropriate attire when your bedroom doubles as your office? http://t.co/eO2ePDXCDT — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) October 22, 2013

And I have to say, it’s something I think about daily: what to wear when working at home — when my home IS my office? Do I dress up to walk up to the 3rd floor? Why get dressed up or even venture from the cozy cocoon of a down duvet when the only person I might see (besides my kids) hasn’t a sartorial care in the world and the only words I could hear during the day might be “sign here” delivered by a UPS guy in his invariable ensemble and too scheduled to chit-chat?

But I do get up and do get dressed up (yay me!!) with no problem on the days I have meetings outside of the house. But on those days when I’m not venturing farther than the kitchen or office - or front porch to grab the mail when no cars are passing - I face the dilemma of what to wear when working at home. Long ago, like not using the nice china for everyday dinners, the “nice” clothes somehow were put away and saved for the more formal occasions of stepping out the door in daylight hours (i.e., business meetings, trips to the coffee shop, standing in line at the post office). And definitely they are donned for evenings. For the work-at-home days in question, Vogue quite helpfully suggests outfits ranging from $340 to $1945 (including a $1355 pajama and slipper set, alas!) Woe to me, I do not wear $175 skirts to sit in my office or $1000 shoes (or wouldn’t if I had them) to tread a flight of stairs. But oh, how often I would slip into the $10 Hanes t-shirt!

You see, my requirement is that I wear pants that button. Seriously, my work clothes requirement is: pants. that. button. I’ll start the day in sweats until I workout, then any stretch waistband is banned from the office after my workout. Why? Because a button is the kind yet strict parent resting on my shoulder to guide me from gaining weight. It never admonishes me, but will make me feel uncomfortable when I’m pushing the limits and using food as my motivator or boredom buster. And when those limits have been reached, I’ll know to cut back a little. But hopefully, with a little help from my button, I’ll be able to resist and stay within range. I’ll also be presentable enough, with a top of course, ranging from a $10 tee to an almost Vogue-worthy top (of the knockoff or 75%+ sale variety, if I’m being completely honest) if it’s a lunch date or coffee date kind of day to answer the door when that kindly UPS man interrupts the silence with his kind words, “Sign here.”

Obviously, Vogue won’t be interviewing me anytime soon for my work-at-home outfit tips. But I’m ok with that since my goal is simply to be presentable enough to answer the door and not gain a size or two as I sit typing. Perhaps my goals should be loftier. And my bank account too.

How about you… what do you wear when working from home when it’s just you, and you alone?

You’re so good! I love it…pants. that. button. Running to change out of my yoga pants no! Thanks for the tips.
    Cheers

I gave up my “yoga” pants years ago when 10 lbs silently crept up on me like a panther stalking its prey and then pounced when I tried to put on a pair of jeans and noticed that nothing in my closet any longer fit. After that happened I almost always wear jeans at home. As much as I’d love to be sporting a skirt or dress while working from home it simply isn’t worth the ironing or laundry, plus I need that reminder around my waist : )

Hahaha, that was a fun post to read. Tomorrow I will be working at home. Nothing but comfy stuff that I can spill on and that does not get any wear and tear for nothing. However I have another thing to consider. My husband is at home (in and out the door) as well. It is like the Sundays when you just want to sit on the couch in your bathrobe. But… Isn’t he the one person you should be adorning yourself for? Let us say I balance between sloppy bathrobe and all dolled up.

Love the idea of the button rule! I wear yoga pants just about every day working from home. Good thing the puppies and UPS guy don’t judge me. But, I do love coffee dates or lunch dates as an excuse to get dressed up and wear real clothes

Sometimes excuses are the best thing ever!!!

Perhaps you need those $1000 pjs after all? But I say matching makeup to bathrobe is genius - it’s your work uniform and how you prepare for the day! If I was in my bathrobe, I’d eat everything in the kitchen and be certain that everyone would pop over to say hello on that day. Call it Kim’s law instead of Newton’s…

OMG - that sounds exactly like ME! We’re not lazy, we’re wise (right??) And the reminder of those years ago. It creeps on, but takes forever to come off. Nevah, nevah again!

Ha, you look fab in those yoga pants (at least from those headshots) :)

I have a very strong discipline for keeping my weight (I bet there will be women who’d hate me for that haha). Discipline deriving from vanity. I cannot bear having a vast wardrobe of nice clothes and not being able to fit into them. No discipline whatsoever when it comes to (not) buying clothes and stuff.
By the way, I am properly dressed today: black skinnies, lime sweater, black belt and booties. Still comfortable (and with button!).

Stopping by from Fab Fridays Linkup! I have the same thought, wearing pants with a button is a rule. Also, showering before noon is another one of my rules :)

When in doubt use SKYPE or Google Hangouts as motivational (ha ha) For work-from-home-days, I dress from the ankles up, but, on my feet are some really super-comfy moccasin slippers.

I’ll take your vast wardrobe… and your strong discipline :)

This winter I may need to add the shower before ___ limit - love it!

Uh-oh, you noticed I didn’t mention what I wear on my feet. I may be the only person who can wear through UGG slippers. I just stole my son’s (now owe him a pair)!

I struggle with this too. Sometimes I load up my MacBook and go to the coffee shop to work just so I’m forced to dress up :)

I struggle with this also! The last few years I done the same, button pants only. It works doesn’t it.

I used to work from home and Carrie Bradshaw’s picture just makes me laugh! Well, lets just say I was always in tee and shorts unless I have to leave the house for a meeting or presentation. On those days I would throw on a pair of shirt, jeans and heels!

Mine’s just the other way around … I try to wear a cute top, or cute layers, and always wear leggings. I don’t wear flats out at all, but those little menswear fancy “Le Smoking” slippers look fun. But then, I only see the dogs, cats and horses. Footwear has to go outside with the dogs easily, but that’s the current criterion. It’s the “cute” that becomes highly situational and subjective.
I have thought lately that I ought to dress up more at home alone. When I think of a good reason, I’ll probably work on it.

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

shirt, jeans and heels make the most glam outfits I can imagine! Just ask the Vogue editors :)

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

If I wore leggings I’d weigh 500 lbs. The simple truth. Otherwise, I’d live in spandex, it’s so comfortable… so my compromise is skinny jeans - you know, the ones with so much stretch they may as well be leggings. Yeah, those! I can’t think of a reason to “dress up” either! Get dressed is as far as I get :)

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

So far I still fit in my winter clothes. If I can wear the clothes in my closet, then I’m happy. I no longer own any scales, so this is my only way to know when I’ve gone “over the chocolate edge”!

    Same here!!!

I’m cute when I’m home but I don’t consider myself fully dressed unless I put on earrings and lipstick, and I’m not wasting my MAC lipstick if I’m not going outside. So I’m never fully dressed when I work at home. I like cute pants and dresses to walk around the house in, I have a different wardrobe for my home than outside.

Such a good point! I haven’t ever thought about it much but I probably err toward the stay in sweats if I am not going anywhere… I will have to give the button philosophy more thought though!
