No, I’m not preppy. Am I?

I’m not preppy. Not in the least. I adore simple and classic. But preppy? Nope. I can say this with a longstanding certainty since I grew up in a very traditional household in an extremely classical town and being “preppy” was not a look that I wanted since fitting in as a teen was somewhere on my agenda between continuing ballet and listening to my parents. In other words: nowhere. I made a concerted effort to stand out in a trendy, yet tasteful, way. I’m not sure if I achieved that lofty fashionable goal in my black and white striped Guess jeans or red kitten heels or starkly simple Prom dress, but I most definitely got an A+ for effort by scouring and devouring my Mom’s fashion magazines, which were snuck to my room and replaced each morning so it looked like I had actually been doing my homework.

But Chloe has embraced all things preppy. And I applaud her for knowing her style and letting her voice be her guide and ignoring my eye rolls just as I ignored my mother’s. She and my Mom have bonded over their prep sensibilities even going so far as my Mom searching the dusty corners of the attic for her Lilly Pulitzer dresses that were worn every single Sunday night for dinner at the club in the 1970′s. Unfortunately for Chloe, they were long gone. But that simple act reminded me of one aspect of the preppy lifestyle that is worth its weight in Sperry topsiders: prep never really goes out of style.

There is no such thing as “throw away fashion” in the prep world where every piece is an investment piece. So maybe I should be taking fashion advice from my daughter. Which is what I did a while ago. The top is from her mecca: Lilly Pulitzer. I bought it and a blue blazer for a trip while she was shopping, and I find that when I’m in a rush or feeling less than 100% fabulous, I default to… dare I say it… preppy? I pull on my more classic pieces since they travel well, and go with anything, from cut-offs to skinny jeans to white pencil skirts. And that is how this look came together. I wanted comfortable, unfussy, and go anywhere. Granted, it’s not very flattering, but I had on the top and slides with jeans and needed something dressier for later, so pulled off the jeans and on came the skirt.

Maybe preps have known something all along: classic style is traditional in the sense that it doesn’t go away and also can fit in anywhere. It may not be as exciting as always updating your look, but fashion has become such a roller coaster lately - almost too fast to keep up with season to season. I must admit it’s nice to always have something in my closet to rely upon. Chloe and my Mom just may have the fashion secret I need & I may be filling in with a few more, ahem, classic pieces.

I don’t see “preppy” here. But, then again, when I was on college Preppy meant snobby and elitist. It meant Polo shirts with starched, turned up collars and penny loafers. Not my thing. You look like a classic and refined lady wearing casual clothes perfectly. If that means “preppy” to you then so be it. You say tomato; I say tomahto ;-)

Oh Kim, you are effortlessly chic! And not preggy, LOL. Yup, that’s what my brain decided to read, when I scrolled down through my bloglovin’ roll. Have a great week!

I love that outfit, and preppy schmeppy. Who cares to label style that’s classic and chic? It’s just perfect!

  • Therese

Preppy is pretty especially on you Kim. The word itself can hold certain connotations that may not bring out a smile for everyone but the truth is classic is always stylish.
Go Chloe!Teaching us moms a thing or two.
    Cheers to you and yours,

Preppy or not, it’s classy and fabulous. And that’s what a girl should look like (according to Coco Chanel). Love it, Kim!

Preppy is in the eye of the beholder, or the mind of the stylist, or somewhere! I like where modern prep has gone … like you are dressing here, it’s classic elements but nowadays it’s with a bit of irony and mixed with other style elements. So yeah, Prep with a twist … so you! Altogether lovely.
Digging your curly locks … I’ve not figured out how to make that work with my newly cropped locks.

oh how I remember preppy, I wet to an elite private school…
I think I rebeled against it as a teen, but I embrace it now. Maybe Chloe can teach my daughters something, as they always hear me saying “we are classy, not trashy”!!
I love that shirt too by the way.

I guess I’m still rebelling… but only in my head. My closet is definitely having an identity crisis. Can you hang Lilly next to leather? The answer is now yes! And this shirt is great (although this one is a little big) and comes in so many gorgeous patterns. I can’t find it any more in cotton, but the silk ones are gorgeous. I’m gonna have to scoop up some more when I accept this side of me. Maybe a pattern that looks great with tie-dye, haha!

I LOVE your haircut! We may be trying out a new curling tool, and if it works, we’ll let you know. But yeah, I’ve always said Chloe was nouveau prep, but never thought of me like that. I was too “rebellious” for prep. But it’s so darned easy. Everything matches. It’s like garanimals for grown-ups. But then again, so is all black… but I’m, dare I say, getting bored with it?? Nah…..

Thank you - I’m loving pencil skirts. I never thought I’d say I loved any kind of skirt - let alone a fitted one, but a bit of stretch makes me happy! And pencil skirts are flattering on everyone!

I usually hate labels, but I’ll take chic :)

She definitely teaches me… a lot :) Thanks, Therese!

Oh no, that’s too funny. But “preggy” is my worst fear. Not the child, but the mistaken for part. My tummy is my worst area!! Glad you got the preppy part, haha!!

I did the collar thing one summer, ugghhh. But with a bit of irony, at least. Only with jeans and madonna-ish accessories. Yikes. Let’s throw the tomato and tomahto at that!

I share that trait with your daughter…to a point. I am drawn to those pieces as well, the Lilly Pulitzer and the classic cable sweaters, and of course…TUNICS (we have had this conversation many times, I know). But like you, I like to “mess up its hair a bit”. But then, I’m originally from Wisconsin, so what would I know about preppy anyway. If you talk to a “true” preppy person, you have to be from New England, have relatives on the Mayflower, disdain pretty much all fashion that is not American made and sturdy, and on and on and on….Principal of good stewardship be damned, if you are not from that microcosm, I think you don’t get to be a “real” preppy. And I’m totally fine with that.

I want to tell you how much I LOVE your hair curled!! I cannot express how much I love it!! Just keep it curled it looks AMAZING!!
