true love

I feel like all I ever blog about anymore is about my classes, but this semester my classes are above and beyond anything I ever could have imagined. I’m learning about concepts that consistently blow my mind, make me think, and make me wonder.

One of my classes in particular has me leaving every class in this bubble of amazement at the world and everything it entails. The other day, our homework assignment was to watch the movie Her by Spike Jonze. At first I was like, “oh yes, an easy homework assignment and an excuse to escape to my room to watch a movie.” But after our class discussion regarding the film, I understood the importance of watching this movie.

In class, we zero-ed in on the idea of true love. The idea of falling in love with your operating system seems out of reach and like an extreme idea. However, when we started talking more about it, I realized how close we are to this idea. Think about Siri for example. Do you say “please” to her subconsciously? Do you love the idea that she can give your directions without rolling her eyes? Weird, right?

My TA commented on my assignment with this statement regarding true love and it gave me “all the feels” as the kids are saying these days.

“Love is such an intense and individual emotion and I don't know how we can rightly say that what someone else is experiencing is not "real". That said, I believe for love to be fully actualized, to reach its highest aspirations, if you will, then it must be a shared experience.
We can't burn our fires long for no warmth, for no light. At least we shouldn’t.”

Poetic, right?
