I'm not sure if I can trace mismatched earrings back to a certain point, but I've definitely been noticing it a lot more lately on the red carpet and in blogs. I can however, personally, trace ear cuffs back to the '80s; but mine, at least, was a little more discreet. I have to say, I adore the resurgence and the boldness of this new ear cuff trend but I jumped on the bandwagon with these subtle, feminine Catbird ear cuffs to ease into the look in a way that is reminiscent of my ear cuffs from the dark ages 1980's.
As a huge fan of Gwyneth Paltrow's clean and simple style I thought she wow-ed when she wore mismatched earrings for the Ironman 3 premiere last spring and then couldn't help but noticing Emma Watson's take on the trend at the Met Gala. Halle Berry has also been spotted wearing the mismatched earring trend quite a bit, maybe because it's a bit more noticeable with her chopped and ever-enviable short hairstyle.
It's easy to wear the trend by simply mixing and matching your own, like these alphabet studs to make a cute X and O or your initials. Or buy a chandelier earring like this one from C Wonder and match it with this cute stud. Pull a Halle Berry by wearing ear cuffs with just about anything, which would be totally glam with short hair or an updo. Or go super simple and buy mismatched earring sets.
Although ear cuffs and mismatched earrings haven't taken off like crazy yet, I hope they continue their fashion trickle down … because they are an easy style to add instant glamour and interest, which I'm all about (hello statement shoes!). Not to mention a way to use those single earrings that are somehow missing a match. Now if only mismatched socks would be on trend for grown-ups!
