Going Grey

I got “a wild hair” {translation: I’m impulsive and wanted to do something crazy.}. Sort of literally. I have grey hair and dye it my natural color - dark brown. But I’m tired. Oh so very tired of dying it every 3 weeks. Every. 3. Weeks. I saw a fab photo of 20 year old who dyed her hair grey which made me want to dye my hair grey and look 20. So that’s when my wild impulsive side kicked in and I wanted gray hair. Now.

I dropped in at my friend Ashley’s favorite place and my honest hairdresser graciously omitted that I wouldn’t look 20 but did say my naturally curly (frizzy) hair would fall out from being over processed and I’d be in every 2 weeks. I want to be hair lazy and I’d like to keep my hair even if it’s a love/hate relationship {we’re codependent that way}. So, my honest hairdresser recommended chunky streaks to camouflage new grey hair and said I have a week to change my mind to any other option. I’m trying to decide if I look like I belong on Jersey Shore, or if it looks somewhat stylish.

This outfit is for heading to a much younger friend’s 40th birthday bash… hmmm, maybe that had something to do with my need to cover my grey hair since I’d be the old lady in the room. I thought the red would take the attention off my hair and wearing my fave color always makes me feel great.

For all of you who have grey hair and cover it, how do you cover grey hair? {Seriously… please let me know, I’ve only got 6 days, 10 hours left to decide.}

Glad you left a message on my post so I could find you! Love your outfit!! You look very chic.
Wish i could advise you on the hair — mine is naturally curly and probably about 40% grey but I keep it colored. Going grey is a big decision that I’m not ready to make yet — maybe in my 70s. Like the idea of chunky grey streaks, though, against your dark brown.
    Stay in touch.

Oh, I love those sandals!! Wow - nice!

It took me about three starts to finally give up dying, but when I was really ready it was easy. I colored my own hair, so I changed to lighter shades the last few times before I quit. That made the root line less obvious. I also didn’t leave the dye in quite as long, so it would fade out quicker. I was lucky that my gray came in very nicely, and I do not miss having to keep up on the dye jobs!

I really like your blog! I cover my gray, curly hair with blonde and highlights and that’s my plan for the foreseeable future (I’m 57). But I love gray hair too - it’s striking and confident (and a lot less work). You’ll look great either way, I am sure. Thanks for linking up to Visible Monday.

Sorry, I cannot tell you how to cover the grey hair. I was facing the same dilemma in my late 40′s when I saw a fabulous woman striding down the sidewalk in a great outfit with her salt and pepper hair swinging in a great cut. That was the end of my dyeing days. I quite like my grey hair.

She does sound inspiring… and I bet you in turn have had the same effect on someone! I envy you… mine isn’t grey enough yet to be “salt and pepper” it would be more pepper with unflattering stripes. I’m counting down the days!

Thank you, and love yours too. Yep, covering is in my forseeable future too :)

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

Lucky you, I wouldn’t miss it either! (Oh, and the shoes are comfortable too, wedges rule!)

I will definitely stay in touch… love your blog! Sounds like we have the same issue and thanks for the advice!

I’ve had to cover my grays since my early 20′s- yikes! Have to use permanent color but I have gone from blonde to black to red now! If you have to color your hair, why not have fun! Love your bright blouse and cool shoes!

Perfect outfit, so wearable for so many events. Love the color and shoes. I like your style!

Blonde hair helps hide/camo grey. But other than that, I have no advice. I’m hair-challenged.

But do love that tunic of yours! Stopping by from Monday Mingle!

I knew there was a reason blondes have more fun, lol!
Thank you, that tunic hides a multitude of sins and has stretch in it. One of my all time favorites :) Thanks you for stopping by and see you next week at Monday Mingle!

How sweet! And yes, with a change of shoes, it can (and has) done a range of events.

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

Truth! I need to stop complaining and just have a color party!

Great tunic! Love your watch. I’ve had to cover my greys too since my early 20′s (it’s genetic).

That tunic is fabulous…love the print and color. I recently started covering my gray…such a pain and it keeps popping back up every few weeks…make me feel so old when I see it!

  • Jan Graham-McMillen

It is so tricky to wear these colors and not look like Halloween. But you did it so beautifully … you look so of-the-moment, and thoughtful with your choices without being self-conscious. Skillful!
I have considerable gray beneath my auburn. I color myself (always have) and manage every four weeks with a standard, 10 minute root-cover after two weeks. My hair is string straight, though, and so fine that any volume must come from “damaged” roots. It’s still in good shape (for which I thank my stars!) I admire your willingness to go gray, and wish you well in the process!

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

I love root cover ups - I can’t imagine life without them! And Halloween is one of my favorite holidays… but more for the candy :) Thanks for your kind words!

The bright makes me feel cheery. Somebody told me grey means wise… so let’s go with that, right?!

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

Thank you, I’m “holding” the watch for my son. Hopefully, he’ll forget it about it when he’s old enough for it, haha! My daughter (17) already sees greys, so I guess she’s blaming me!

You look amazing, gray hair or no gray hair. I love the shoes and the flouncy top. That pattern is fabulous! And BTW, I’m 30, and I have my share of gray hairs too. It happens :) I’ve learned to embrace them.

Ditto all these comments, you look fantastic and nothing like your age! My hairdresser suggests blond chunky stripes (MUCH better than it sounds) in my brunette hair to cover grey and it works! I also like having a modern cut and colour. I couldn’t see the grey streaks properly in the photo so if you’re game, post a close up. It looks like a really flattering haircut too. By the way, so impressed with the amount of comments you’re getting - what’s your secret!!

  • lisa schron

your outfit is SO CUTE! love the whole thing, but i have a love of … maybe an obsession … with shoes, and those are fab! my only comment about the hair is that you should do what you’re most comfortable with. we’ll all be there some day, and i’m storing up wisdom now to tap into later … so let us know what you decide!

  • http://www.popcosmo.com/ PopCosmo

That’s exactly what I did- blonde chunky stripes! I love them, but think mine aren’t chunky enough. Next time :) IDK the secret to the comments… I’d have to say it’s the website redesign. Click on the link at the very bottom right of the page and talk to Tiffany. She has amazing designs (custom & pre formatted) and once we got a new design the comments started rolling in. DM me on Twitter or email me if you seriously want more info. It’s been an amazing change!

    Hi Kim!
You’re wearing two of my fav colors! You need to go to a UT football game with me…you’d fit right in!!
I go to my stylist every6-8 weeks to cover my grey streaks. She only colors the new growth but it’s a pain in the rumpus! I would go all naturale but my grey is harsh, not soft and pretty.
So happy to have found your blog!

  • Magda

Love this colors on you, you are amazing!

I’m totally a slave to the colorist because of the damn gray! Every three and a half weeks. I can’t believe that I’m there! I feel so much younger than my hair looks. How did this happen?

Congrats on your cool blog and recent press. that is how I found you! I have an 18 year old daughter and we love to collab on stuff, too!

3-1/2 weeks. Lordy, I’d be broke! Have you tried any of the home color products? I used to use them, but just got all fancy with stripes in my hair to help hide the chunks of grey and now have to go, but try to stretch it as long as possible. So I pull out the scarves at about week 5!!!

Thanks for the kind words and so glad you found us… checking out your blog and can’t wait to see how y’all collaborate!

  • http://twitter.com/SmartyCassie Cassie Piasecki

My colorist would kill me if I tried something in home! Lucky for me, my hubs likes a little high maintenance wife. Some men like bootys, some like chests….mine likes good hair and high shoes. Perfect!

This made me laugh out loud! And give him a big hug, lucky gal :)
