Links-I-Love.jpg

Whew! I survived Junior year (just barely) and all the exams that come with the whole experience. I’m officially on summer break, and you know what that means, time for nothing. Not having the responsibilities of school work means that I can aimlessly scroll through the deepest darkest parts of the internet and have no regrets for spending my whole day doing just that. So if you’re not quite on summer break but still want to know what’s trending then you’re in the right spot.

Links I Love via Pinterest

These are the links I love lately.

Dying to try this summer fruit salsa, it looks so delicious that I started drooling while reading the recipe.

Becky from Chipper Things is my new idol. Plus, her Etsy shop is amazing, I’m kinda feelin’ like I need this print in my life.

My family and I are moving into a new house this summer and I’m brainstorming how I want my room to look. Cue all things minimalistic and pretty.

I’ve been dying to go to the beach lately, and this picture has me dreaming of a sojourn in Mexico.

I’m dying to try all of these fruity smoothie recipes, especially that peach & ginger one.

Continuously reminding myself this quote.

Do you have any links that I need to know about? If so, be sure to share them with me in the comments!

6 gifts I know my mom would love for Mother's Day

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe6 Comments

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and I’ve been brainstorming the perfect gift to get my wonderful mom this year. I think it’s so hard to buy my mom presents because she never hints at what she wants, and if she does, the item is way out of my price range. So the key to gifting a great present, for me at least, is to buy something that is either fun and cute or something that is practical and she’ll use all the time. I think all of the presents on the gift guide are something that are the perfect mix between practical and fun which make for a great present! This gift guide is probably my most favorite one that I’ve ever made and I totally wouldn’t mind snatching any of these presents for myself. And since my mom and I have the same taste (for the most part) I think she’d be happy with any of these gifts!

mother's day gift guide

1. A BAG that charges her phone!  A catch all bag that is made of buttery smooth leather. All moms need a big bag, and this one is cute to boot! Plus, there’s a built in phone charger since her phone is always dying! Double whammy, double the love!

2. Phone Case My mom is ALWAYS losing her phone. She has the old pink case, but I think it's time for an update, and a bright pink case means it's easier to spot when she sets it down on a shelf. In a store. And walks away. Only so we can go running back for it....

3. POUCH  To help keep my mom organized in her catch-all bag (i.e., glasses, credit card, keys) or to use when she doesn’t want to carry a big bag. It could even be an adorable cosmetic case.

4. CREAM Moms always love lotion. This is such a simple gift but it’ll last her all year long. Be sure to pick out a scent that she always says she loves!

5. FLOWERS The original mother’s day gift, and there is nothing wrong with that. Place your mom’s favorite flowers in a pretty vase and you’ve got a gorgeous gift!

6. CARD Last but not least, a card! My mom always says, "this is all I need." A handwritten note can go far so if you don’t have any extra money laying around (lookin’ at you teenagers) or you just want to give a note along with your gift. Your mom will be happy to know that you took time out of your day to write her a sweet little note!

I’d love to know what you’re getting your mom for Mother’s Day, let me know in the comments! And yeah Mom, now you know what I'm choosing from this year :) xo ~chloe

Kentucky Derby Tips & Tricks

All, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe1 Comment

How to Navigate the Kentucky Derby @popcosmo.com “Derby” in Louisville is not just a day… it’s an experience. It lasts a few weeks and there are more events leading up to the Kentucky Derby that we can list here. Our first year in Louisville, we were surprised, amazed, and overwhelmed with the parties, events, balloons, fireworks and airshows. There are official events for the Kentucky Derby and plenty of unofficial ones.

My first year at Derby, I had a million questions and asked a million + 1 people for advice. Over the years, I questioned even more patient people about their tips and tricks for “doing Derby” and below is the advice I've gained from them + my experiences. Mastering the art of the Kentucky Derby is do-able, with a few tips & tricks.

If YOU have any tips you’d like to share, please do so in the comments.

The most asked question: what do I wear to the races?:

  • The bigger the better, the louder the better, the brighter the better! But comfort is key and so is something washable since the likelihood of a drink splashing on you is high due to hours spent around drinks and total number of drinks you will encounter throughout the day (regardless of whether or not you will be drinking). Add the fact that you might be eating a picnic lunch on your lap if you are sitting in an outdoor box seat, and you have a recipe for a messy day.
  • Prints and washable dresses are all good options, silk is best left for the jockeys, and warm weather fabrics are a must.
  • You are only allowed to bring in 12” bags this year, so we recommend a crossbody bag (you’ll want free hands).
  • You have long days ahead of you with lots of walking involved, so stick a pair of the most comfortable and blister-free flats Yosi Samra fold-up shoes or a pair of flip-flops in your bag (your feet will thank us) and you’ll look like you’ve been doing Derby for years. If you can’t bear to change, wear broken-in comfortable shoes, and bring bandaids.
  • Bring ponchos if there's an inkling of rain since you can't bring an umbrella. If you wear a clear one, your outfit will shine through. Check the weather before you go!!
  • Don't over-accessorize. If you have a flashy hat- keep your jewelry in check. Conservative hat- play up jewelry.
  • Do not try to get a spray tan a few days before Derby. You'll be waiting in line for hours.
  • Here's a post about what to wear to the Kentucky Derby.

On Fridays we wear pink: Oak’s Day is Friday and is the filly’s race. It is just as exciting as the Kentucky Derby. Schools cancel classes and it had been local’s day, but now it is no longer a Louisville secret and is getting to be just as crowded and festive as Derby Day. "Locals day" is being pushed back to Thursday as more people arrive for the weekend to celebrate. In the past few years, the tradition had been to wear pink to honor breast cancer research and survivors. You can get decked out in all pink (check  out a Oak's Day outfit idea) or wear touches of pink… and don’t think pink is just for the girls! Guys can sport a pink tie or dress in all pink too. Vineyard Vines has a fabulous men's Derby collections.

Fascinator v. Big hats: Obviously, personal preference. I'm a fascinator girl -- something about being able to turn my head and peripheral vision (go figure). But, if you’re sitting outdoors and the day is sunny, a big hat could come in handy. Regardless, bring sunscreen!! Whatever you wear, make sure it doesn’t pinch, or slip. If you forgot to bring a hat, run by Dee's and they'll make one for you to match your outfit.

Calling all party girls: If you can party all day and party all night and want to support charities, purchase tickets to the Julep Ball and the Barnstable Brown party and mingle with celebs who show up for Derby and Oaks.

Dawn at the Downs: Eat breakfast on Millionaire’s Row and watch Derby contenders working out. It’s a unique Kentucky Derby experience on the weekdays.

Can we get there from here?: Plan on spending a long time in the car and consider it part of the experience. Unless you arrive very early in the morning, and even if you do, you might be parking in someone’s yard, so bring cash. Unless you park at Churchill Downs, plan on a long walk to the track, and check out these parking maps for Derby week in advance.

Some options to avoid parking by Churchill Downs (which can be a nightmare): park near one of the many bus stops and bus into Churchill Downs, park in the lot near Cardinal Stadium, find a teenager to pick you up and drop you off, or rent a bus for a big group, or take Uber, which arrived this year.

Food, food and more food: At the track – If food is not included with your ticket, you can bring a box lunch, but be sure to check the rules about what is allowed to be brought in the gates.

  • Vendors come around with drinks- order several. That way you don't have to wait in long lines, and next time they pass, you will be ready for another.
  • Remember to hydrate with water too!

Around Town – Make reservations for hotels and dinners (before and after races) as soon as you know you’ll be attending. Good luck finding either at the last minute. But, if you don’t have reservations, find a Louisville food truck. {We love Grind burgers!} And since many homeowners head out-of-town for the Derby and rent their houses, you might find one on VRBO.com or airbnb.com at the last minute.

It's Bourbon country, baby!: As the home of Bourbon, get ready to drink a lot of it at the Derby (but please don't drink & drive!). And while here, visit the distilleries, which can even be family outings. Actually the official drink of the Oaks is the Oaks Lily which is made with vodka; but yes, the traditional drink of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby is a Mint Julep, which is made with bourbon. Although traditionally served in a silver cup, at the Derby (and Oaks), you’ll receive a commemorative glass cup with each order. Keep ‘em and start your collection.

Tickets & Seating: We suggest buying tickets directly from Churchill Downs. You’ll get a good description of your seat and the amenities. Pay attention to where your seat is located - your box seat may be in a section exposed to rain or sun all day long. If you want to play it safe, make sure you buy a “covered” seat. If you are trackside, you are not covered, but you’ll have a great view. Your seats (unless you are in suites indoors) are folding chairs. There are six in a box and your “box” is actually a metal bar, so you’ll know your neighbors quite well by the end of the day. The fun of Derby is seeing the outfits, the horses before the races, the horses walking to and from the Paddock, etc., so wandering around is not only highly encouraged, it is part of the experience.

The Ladies Room: No matter where you sit, you will have a great view. But the bathrooms are what set everyone apart. Drinking all day means... long lines in the ladies' room. But don’t be discouraged. The efficiency of the attendants is the best I’ve ever encountered. However, if you are headed to the infield, byot. (Bring your own toilet paper). We hear they've been known to run out. If you are in the suites, enjoy the semi-privacy and no long lines!

What is the Infield?: No tickets? No worries! You can always gain access to the infield. While Oaks Day may not be that crowded, Derby day will most definitely be packed. The infield is made up of a partying crowd that’s come to enjoy themselves. You’ll have access to the Paddock area as well, but since there is no limit to the number of tickets that are sold for the infield, prepare for crowds. And if it has rained, get ready for mud. And unless you secure a spot near the track, you might miss the races, but you can enjoy the party!

All bets are on!: If you aren’t an expert in betting, read the program. There is a little tutorial and key in the front. You don’t want to be  “that” girl holding up the line, you want to be talking about trifectas with the rest of the gang.

  • Bring $1 bills. Lots of them… the lines to the ATM are longer than the betting lines.
  • If you win, it's customary to tip the clerk. (Supposedly it brings you good luck!)
  • Betting on colors, names and birthdays is fine. You'd be surprised how many people beat the odds with these bets - but don't hold us to it.

Misc:

  • Bring a phone phone for photos and a backup battery because service is spotty, especially if you want to Instagram.
  • Show Louisville some love with the Louisville Love app for photos, if you have service!
  • Bring ibuprofen or aspirin. With noise, hats, cigar smoke, heat, etc., you have the perfect storm for headaches.
  • Fashion First Aid has a handy pack you can carry in your purse of essentials you might need for the day. We kinda think it would be handy for trips too! It'll cover hat problems, heel blisters, armpit stains and more in a handy package. (I'm pretty impressed by how they have a solution for just about any problem I have!)

After you've completed all your planning for the best weekend ever, the most important tip is to sit back, enjoy the races, and have some fun in Louisville! It's a fantastic city to explore apart from the races with amazing dining, wonderful parks, a beautiful river, and the friendliest people you ever did meet.

Many thanks to local friends Natalie, Ashley, Christy of The Bourbon Blush, and Shelley for their tips, & everyone else I've pestered over the years!

My new morning ritual: TheSkimm

I’m a huge news junkie. I love knowing the latest events that are happening around the world, no matter the topic. Whether it was what's going on in the Masters, what's the latest celeb baby name, or the update on the Malaysian airline, I’m interested. However, I don’t really enjoy watching the news because there are so many irrelevant stories, and even more irrelevant commercials. I also don’t like reading the newspaper because I just can’t figure out how to hold the entire thing without it falling apart (maybe I should practice?).

reading newsvia Pinterest

But one thing I love is TheSkimm; it’s a news service that sends you an email every weekday morning telling you the highlights of everything that you should be prepared to know for the day. TheSkimm breaks all the latest stories down into easy readable sections so you know only what you need to know, and there are no difficult words, because when it comes down to it, hard words don’t make you seem smarter they just make it look like you know how to use synonyms.com. Oh, and have I mentioned that 2 women news reporters are behind this powerhouse of an app?

Y’all should definitely sign up for TheSkimm if you’re a news junkie, or if you want to find out what's going on in the world. Plus, it has this awesome section called “Repeat After Me…” where it helps you be prepared to sound more intelligent if a certain topic comes up during your day. For example, one of the recent columns of “Repeat After Me…” was “What to say when someone posts about their political opinions…” Helpful, right? Also, since the Masters is dominating sports right now, you might want to know who Bubba is... and not in a Forrest Gump sort of way.

Ok, excuse me while I brush up on my current events and impress my Dad {who reads 2 newspapers a day}....

Louisville Eats: Wiltshire Pantry

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe7 Comments

My mom and I have been eating out a lot lately and continue to seek the best of Louisville lunch spots. It's sort of our mid-day break from work and school. And I mentally take these spots and think could I do school work here? Another question I ask is how healthy is this food for me as I try to get in shape and eat right. And I also want to be in a place that's friendly and kind, with good energy. Wiltshire Pantry Bakery & Café is a checklist filler! It's serves vegan and gluten-free options, which are surprisingly hard to find in a city as big as Louisville, and Terry makes me feel right at home every time I walk through the door. I wish I could say I was unique, but she seems to know everyone! And with soup specials every day that sound creamy but have bases of nuts or vegetables, and salads and sandwiches that make me want to come back every day, I know that I'm not veering off-course of my healthy trend.

My "study and brunch" outfit of denim on denim is a look I’ve never really been a fan of, until I recently saw a picture of a girl on Pinterest who was wearing her denim shirt with a white tee underneath and I loved it! So I copied her as any good pinner would do. I think I like it… who knew a simple tee (well, my new amazingly soft tee that fits perfectly, actually) could completely change a look?

If I was a social media site I would most definitely be Instagram. It’s seriously my favorite by far (well, y'all probably know pinning on our Pinterest is a close second). I could scroll through my feed for hours, and I always become giddy when I find a picture that’s worthy of double-tapping. I also happen to get a little too excited when I discover a new Instagram feed that’s impeccably curated. Here’s round two (be sure to check out Instagram Loves: round one) of my favorite Instagram accounts as of late….

instaloves

@coolmarbelous: this feed is perfectly minimalistic. Sometimes plain white backgrounds can be uber boring, but the Cool & Marbelous team makes white look fabulously chic. Go follow them now, you won’t be disappointed!

@sheila_gim: Sheila’s feed is bright, bold, and beautiful with wonderful hints of darkness (i.e., the picture above). If I could step into Sheila’s life for a day, I would be so, so excited. Sheila also works with DesignLoveFest a lot, so there’s a chance you’ve seen her photos floating around the internet.

@ashleux: Ashley’s feed never fails to inspire me to see the beauty in everything. Seriously, she managed to make even the ordinary look extraordinary. If you love when an Instagrammer’s feed meshes together perfectly, then definitely go follow Ashley!

@wideeyedlegless: Madeylnn’s feed is also super gorgeous and minimal. I think it’s so inspiring how she can make something so simple look so beautiful and elegant. If you’re a fan of minimal, then this will be your new favorite feed. Sometimes I wish I could like her pictures more than once ;)

Hope to see you Instagramming! xo ~chloe

8 links I love this week

gorgeous-hairstyle.jpg

I've been so inspired this week, despite having a "thumbs-down" day earlier this week (as you know, if you're following along on Instagram). But the week is improving, and here's what has me swooning.

black and white perfection

I’m crazy obsessed with ^ this simple outfit. Black & white perfection.

I’m currently taking a "Lettering for Designers: One Drop Cap Letterform at a Time" on Skillshare. I swear SkillShare has something for everyone - it's the most amazing thing since the creation of pre-made cookie dough.

I recently purchased this shirt so that I can wear it when I go running and literally be a walking (or rather running) definition for the word “ironic.”

I'm ready to play golf. And this golf  / croquet DIY would be perfect for a lawn party & so Alice in Wonderland.

Because nothing's hotter than a man in a suit on a penny board. Or a surfboard.

Over spring break, I will be chopping my hair so that it’ll mimic this gorgeous hairstyle. (image on main page)

The real definition of “rebellious.”

Buzzfeed quizzes are my favorite way to waste time (that is, besides Pinterest and Youtube).

How about you - what's keeping you inspired?

Art on my mind

College, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe8 Comments
h2_23.14.8.jpg

As many of you might know, I’m a junior in high school. This means almost everything on my mind is related to college in some way. Stressful? You betcha, I’m just lucky that I don't stress out easily.

Anyway, I really want to major in Communications Design - which is sort of like a graphic design major. However, at my dream school (which shall remain nameless for fear of future embarrassment if I don’t get in) in order to become a part of the Communications Design major you have to take a full year of other art classes including Drawing and Painting. Although I am a quick learner when it comes to graphic arts and photography, drawing and painting are definitely not my forté. At this point, the only things that I can confidently draw include stick figures and trees. This is not a joke.

In order to even be considered at my dream school or other similar schools (because hey, I'm realistic) in my dream major, I have to submit a portfolio. I have plenty of graphic design and photography pieces to submit, but when it comes to drawings and paintings, yeah… I’ve got nothing. Because my parents are awesome, they have allowed me to start taking art lessons with a local teacher. My first lesson is was Tuesday, and saying I'm excited about my classes would be an understatement.

My point? I wanted to share a few pieces that I find remarkably inspiring. I also wanted to see if y’all would be interested in me sharing my art journey. I was thinking that once every few weeks I could show you a few pieces of work that I had done or a few pages of my sketchbook. Thoughts?

Calligraphy made easy

DIY, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe10 Comments

Learn Calligraphy online

In my childhood, I used to get these strong thoughts in my head about how talented I would be at something. I had this vision in my head of me becoming the next famous softball player, scrabble player, or baton twirler and begged my parents for lessons or to join a local team. My parents knew that these things probably wouldn't be my cup of tea and that I might embarrass myself in the process, but they let me take lessons and learn my lesson the hard way. I joined a local softball team and almost broke my hand by putting my hand in front of my glove to catch the ball (why!?), I lose at almost scrabble games (I still love it though), but my my mom  put her foot down when it came to baton twirling lessons, thank goodness. And now I'm not even sure why I was interested in taking those!

But I am totally into calligraphy and one of my goals this year is to become super-amazing at calligraphy. I recently took a class on SkillShare and haven’t looked back since, which you've probably noticed on our Instagram. I think this might actually be my thing. In fact, I might be {one day, if I practice} pretty good at it. *gasp* So since I’m basically a calligraphy prodigy (haha) I figured I better fill you in on a few tips since calligraphy is totally trending right now!

how to learn calligraphy

WHAT YOU NEED TO START CALLIGRAPHY:

Things to know :

-This is not your grandmother's calligraphy. But it can be if you want it to be. There are all styles of calligraphy, and I happen to like modern… not traditional.

-Calligraphy supplies really aren’t that expensive. You need:

  • nibs
  • pen
  • paper
  • ink

-You do not have to have amazing handwriting to start calligraphy. If you practice your style enough then you can totally pull it off!

-Calligraphy is super messy, at least for me. Make sure you aren’t writing on a nice desk, because ink will most likely be splattered all over it, and not in a chic way.

-Practice makes perfect, so practice, practice, and practice some more.

Places to learn calligraphy :

-Skillshare > search Calligraphy.  This is where I learned. Since I loved it so much, I'm going to be take more classes, maybe here, maybe one of the awesome places below, to keep learning! Uh, maybe this summer when school slows down. Junior year is buuussssy.

-Fake it ‘till you make it - not really calligraphy, it's, wait for it… how to fake it. Or if you want a true short cut, just buy the font.

-I still love Calligraphy - I don't know much about this, but it looks pretty.

-LH Calligraphy has a a super-cute starter kit on Etsy and a gorgeous Instagram! The price is reasonable too.

@jasminedowling: I recently stumbled upon Jasmine’s feed and her pictures never cease to add a little sprinkle of happiness into my day! I especially love her amazing calligraphy skills, which y'all know I'm working on if you follow our Instagram.

@amber__moore: Amber’s pictures always have the perfect amount of white space to them so they are so calming and simple. I love the way she is able to make a busy scene look simple with her angles and framing skills.

Exam Essentials

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe2 Comments

How to study for exams

My exam essentials are what I use every semester to collect my thoughts, organize my notes, and finalize my preparation for my semester exams. Although everyone's study process is different, the exam essentials list is pretty similar since we all need to organize what is, at least for me, floating around in different binders and various nooks and crannies in my room!

/planner/ Stay organized! Use a cute planner to write down your schedule and to do lists for the day. Be sure to pencil in breaks between study sessions.

/pencils/ Mechanical pencils are the best so you don’t have to worry about sharpening every two seconds. Using pink pencils or my old fashioned DIY gold pencils inspires me to get the job done!

/highlighters/ Go back through your notes and highlight the important terms. Don't get too crazy with your highlighter though, not everything you wrote down needs to be a color.

/folders/ Go through your binders and put all important assignments, tests, and quizzes in a folder so that you can have them all in one organized place. Use a different color folder for each class.

/notebook/ Try handwriting your study guide to help engrain the material in your mind. Use a three or five subject notebook depending on how many classes you have. Maybe even take a study break every once in a while to decorate a notebook cover.  PS - follow us on Bloglovin' to catch our upcoming notebook cover ideas!

/flashcards/ Making “old-fashioned” flash cards will help you to better remember your terms and vocab. Instead of writing the definition of the word or question on the back, write a mnemonic or helpful hint (i.e., Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety two - an oldie but goodie that I'll never forget!). I’m telling you it really helps to write a rhyme or cute little phrase! My mom says a guy in her law school class rapped the entire semester of one her classes. Whoa!

And lastly, I want to wish you all good luck and happy successful studying! xox ~chloe

PPS: Hannah Margaret had some great study tip reminders!

Snowapolooza Weekend Ideas

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe1 Comment

This past week has been especially grey, weather wise and now it's snowing, and soon it will probably be slushy. When it’s gross outside it always puts me in the most unproductive mood. I don’t know if I’m the only one who feels this way, but when it’s rainy, snowy, or just grey I would rather bundle up and watch a movie than do anything productive. So in honor of it being Friday and everything, here are five things that to keep almost anyone busy this weekend…

 things to do this weekend

via Pinterest

{1} make a wreath to decorate your front door, or room door like this cute pompom wreath. this will also put your whole family in a festive (and happier) mood!

{2} bake a cute cake and eat it too.

{3} buy all of your friends a present then take your time making the wrapping cuter than the actual gift.

17 going on 70: Why I'm a Grandma trapped in a Teen's body

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe3 Comments

Sometimes I wonder if I’m a grandma trapped in a teenagers body. On a scale from one to rebellious teenager, I’m a negative one. So today I’m going to share teen reasons why I think I’m actually a grandma. Before I start, I just want to let you know that I am being 100% serious with these reasons. This. Is. Not. A. Joke. 17 going on 70

1. An exciting Friday night for me is watching old 80’s movies in bed. (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Buellers Day Off, etc. Yeah, they're my faves.)

2. I sometimes forget my blinker is on when I’m driving. People behind me are probably like “that dumb grandma forgot to turn her blinker off” and then when they pass me (because I’m slow) they realize that I’m just a teenager.

3. Real Simple magazine is my all time favorite magazine. Judge me, but I don’t care because I know how to do things like peel potatoes and wash the counters better than you because of it. So who’s the real winner here?

4. When I was like 8 I got hot pink nail polish on my finger nails at the salon because that’s what all the cool girls did. But after I got home I just felt too rebellious and had to take it off. I now typically stick with light pinks, reds, and occasionally navy blue nail polishes. (Essie, of course)

5. I go to sleep at 9 o’clock. If I don’t then I am too exhausted to function the next morning. My friends used to make fun of me for going to sleep so early, but I know they were just jealous that I finished all my homework faster than them. I mean, duh.

6. When I see those “skater punk boys” in the mall parking lot doing dumb things I always shake my head and say “dumb teenagers.” That means I actually forget that I too am a teenager.

7. I keep all of my plans in a paper planner. I have never used the calendar on my computer or phone because it just confuses me to no end.

8. I use phrases like “gosh darn it,” “goodness gracious,” “okie dokie,” and “tummy” seriously. My family always laughs at me, especially with when I say “my tummy hurts.” (Maybe this is more baby than grandma, but still…)

9. I would be perfectly content spending my entire weekend baking. Homemade cookies? Yep. Homemade cake? I got you.

10. My mom’s clothes are probably “cooler” than mine, but I don’t care because my clothes are classic and I will still be able to wear them when I’m an actual grandma. Again, who's the real winner here?

So there you have it. 10 reasons why I’m actually a grandma - and don't get me started on my grey hair. Do you have grandma-like qualities too? If so, do share so I feel a little bit better about myself. ;)

We are thrilled to have Ella guest-posting again today. A college student at WKU, Western Kentucky University, she is passionate about spreading the word and starting meaningful conversations about teen dating violence. And we not only believe that she has a powerful & critical message to share, but that she has the voice to do so. If you think that domestic violence is not an issue that affects your friends or teens, think again. The fact is that 1 in 3 teens experience sexual or physical abuse or threats from a boyfriend or girlfriend in one year. (Source: NoMore, 2013) We are proud to share her video with you and hope that it will start a meaningful conversation with your family and friends. For more information about NOMORE.org and Domestic Violence, please click here. NO MORE end domestic violence

Ella: Earlier this year several non-profit organizations and businesses across the nation came together to launch the NO MORE campaign. The NO MORE campaign was inspired by the desire of those in the field of sexual and domestic violence prevention to change the conversation about sexual and domestic violence. For years advocates for both of these issues have competed for funding and attention from the public. Thanks to the new NO MORE symbol (a teal disc) they have come together for the first time. The goal for the NO MORE symbol is to do what the pink ribbon and the red ribbon did for Breast Cancer and HIV/AIDS awareness—removed the societal stigma surrounding the issues.

Ella & NOMORE.org

I started following the NO MORE campaign when it first launched and I have been incredibly inspired by the potential I was seeing in such a simple concept. I was so inspired that I decided I would use a video project for one of my journalism classes as an opportunity to make an on-campus Public Service Announcement (PSA) called ‘WKU says NO MORE’.

For my project I wanted to speak directly to the issues of sexual violence and victim blaming on college campuses and I invited students and faculty from my university to participate in the video, which was filmed entirely on campus. I asked all of the participants to think about phrases they had heard of victim blaming on campus and then say NO MORE to that phrase by writing it on a poster board and holding it somewhere on campus where their fellow students and colleagues could see them.

I never thought ‘WKU says NO MORE,’ would be seen by anyone other than me, my professor, and those who were in the video–I couldn’t have been more wrong. I posted the video to my Facebook late last Saturday night and by the time I woke up more than a dozen people had commented on the post praising its message. It was then that I realized that this video had more potential than I was giving it credit for. I began asking my friends to share it on their social media pages. Within 24 hours the video was shared on Facebook and had made its way to Twitter as well. Its movement was unbelievable and it was affecting people. The video was watched more than 1,500 times in 4 days and was shared on the Facebook and Twitter pages of the Joyful Heart Foundation, NO MORE, and several other non-profit organizations across the country. I am humbled and amazed by the reach this video has had in such short time period and I hope you will continue to help spread the word about the NO MORE movement by watching the video and sharing it with your friends.

Thanks!  <3 Ella
