TEDYouth Day

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe5 Comments
stage-1.jpg

As most of y’all know I recently went to New Orleans to attend TEDYouth with Toyota. I had an absolutely amazing time and can't believe how much I learned! If you missed my first post about working with Toyota then be sure to check it out here. That being said, the TEDYouth conference was incredible. I had the opportunity to listen to some really cool people speak. Including the one and only Ashton Kutcher. Um, can you say cool? So here’s what my day looked like: 8:40 am: Leave hotel and walk to the Civic Theatre. There were a few hundred people at the theatre lucky enough to watch live, but thousands tuned in online (and you can still see everything too: click here) 9:00 am: Meet the other iReporters and eat a quick breakfast. 10:00 am: Try out the Toyota Simulator. I did not even get to test out a distraction because I crashed too early in the game. I need to step up my driving skills apparently :) Look how popular it was - there was a long line to try it.

TeenDrive 365

It was SO cool. You get in and see what happens when you text and drive, or drink water or change the radio station. And everyone can watch you on the tv monitors. That's ok, they may have blinked when I was in it!

TEDYouth 11:00 am: Listen to the first set of speakers. My favorite was Ron Finley because he showed how you can plant a garden anywhere. Literally, anywhere. Got an old cart, make it a garden. He was so inspiring, and reminded me how much I used to love gardening! 12:30 am: Lunch for the iReporters 12:45 pm: Interview TedYouth attendees about distracted driving. (see below to hear about what I learned! It’s actually pretty interesting) 2:15 pm: Listen to the second set of speakers and was so in awe of McKenna Pope who was annoyed that the Easy Bake Oven was targeting only girls. So she wrote the CEO of Hasbro... and he listened. It just shows what we can do if we see a problem and do something about it. 3:00 pm: Second break. This was also the time where the iReporters and I received some great speaking tips and we figured out what we were going to say on stage. The big stage. The stage in front of 400 people. *stomach butterflies*

TedYouth in New Orleans 3:30 pm: Third session. This was the session that I spoke in during the convention. Ahh. My favorite speaker spoke about elephants and told us how they are similar to us. It was so interesting. And then, Ashton Kutcher took the stage and spoke about how we may make mistakes, but we need to follow our dreams and move forward. Don't let obstacles stand in the way and pursue opportunities when they come along. I'll remember this speech for a long, long time.

TEDYouth speaker Ashton Kutcher 6:00 pm: TEDYouth is over. {so sad} 7:00 pm : My mom and I ate a celebratory dinner at a restaurant called Red Fish Grill and I finally had some fresh, raw oysters. I'd almost forgotten how good they were. 9:00 pm : Fell asleep after a very tiring yet awesome day.

So as I mentioned in the schedule, I was able to interview the attendees about distracted driving. I learned so much about what people think distracts them the most, but I learned two things that have really stayed with me.

The first thing I learned is that kids that don’t drive yet think texting is terrible and that they will absolutely never do it when they get their license. In contrast, people that are at or above the driving age know that texting is one of the worst things they can partake in while driving yet most of them were still guilty of doing it. Crazy, right?

The second thing I discovered is even more interesting. One of the groups of people that I interviewed were a set of tough looking guys. I figured that these guys were going to make a joke about distracted driving and just not take me seriously. However, I could not have been more wrong. Not only were these guys super sweet but they were the only people of driving age that I talked to who said that they never ever text and drive. When I asked them why not, they said that they recently had a friend that got into a terrible accident because he was texting and driving. Then they mumbled something about how their moms would kill them if she found out that they texted and drove.

These guys really got me thinking about how we all think that we are immune to accidents happening to us. We all are guilty of thinking that we live in some kind of protective bubble that will prevent us from getting hurt. We, of course, are wrong and sometimes we need to remember how important it is to practice safe driving habits in order to keep ourselves safe and others on the road. Because driving while distracted really is a selfish act after all!

Again, thanks so much Toyota for allowing me to help y’all out at TEDYouth. I had an absolute blast and learned tons :)

TGIF y'all! I hope you've been enjoying yourself this past week. Today, as we head off to New Orleans for our TEDYouth adventure, I just want to share a few links to some inspirational websites and this week's internet loves. Whether they're giving you healthy tips or free desktop downloads, I think they'll brighten your day just a little bit! Thanks to Stripes & Peonies for the inspiration on this new layout... hope you all enjoy!
- As the weather is starting to get chillier I have been uninspired to go outside for a run. Since I don't belong to a gym I looked up videos on YouTube. This YouTube channel totally inspired me to workout in my room when I have a few extra minutes.
- This Tumblr account has an absolutely endless amount of great book recommendations. I'll definitely be reading a few of their suggestions as I have been searching for a new great read.
- This holiday playlist makes me want the holiday season to be here already. I need some festivity in my life :)
- I'm not typically a big makeup person, but these looks have inspired me to experiment a little bit!
- Bri from Design Lovefest always has tons of inspiration on her blog, but I'm overly obsessed with her latest free desktop downloads
Do you have any internet loves this week you want to share?

Teen Blogger Showcase: The Blonde Prep

The Blonde Prep Frannie is another one of my bloggy besties! I absolutely love Frannie's blog, The Blonde Prep, because she adds a fresh perspective to the preppy blogging world. She always seems to twist the trends up and go with a unique - but awesome - look!

Also, Frannie has the world's best hair. I probably tell her I love her hair at least once every other day, and she might think it's creepy, but I'm totally jealous of her long blonde locks. (can we trade?). Not only do I love Frannie's blog, but she is probably the most hilarious person I've even met (we haven't met in real life yet, but I'm assuming..). I love that Frannie tells it like it is and is never afraid to share what she is really thinking. It's something that I strive to do, because I constantly worry about what other people are thinking instead of saying how I feel. Props to you, Fran.  *#dwc*

Texting & Driving: a teen's view

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe10 Comments
Dont-Text-Drive.jpg

Before I start, I want to let y’all know some SUPER exciting news! Are you ready? Dun dun dun... I will be attending TEDYouth conference in New Orleans this weekend as part of my partnership with Toyota for TeenDrive365. Texting & Drive: a teen's perspective

Texting & driving... it’s a topic that our parents love to talk about with us teenagers. Unlike drinking and driving, texting & driving wasn’t around when our parents were our age. It boggles my mind when I start thinking too hard about it. Remember when Razor flip phones where a thing? That seems like forever ago, am I right?

But cellphones are something that take up so much of our concentration and time. The other day I was practicing my calligraphy on a piece of paper and while writing I glanced at my phone. In those few milliseconds while I glanced at my phone, I had ruined my handwriting. I know nobody’s life was at stake, but ...... Don’t get me wrong though, I absolutely love my iPhone. In fact, I’m addicted to my phone. If I was in a relationship with it, then I would represent the “overly attached girlfriend” meme to the extreme. Maybe I should start my own meme?

As some of y’all know, I am new to the whole driving world. When I was learning to drive I was terrible. Just ask my dad - he refused to drive with me for the first year. He’s a 50 year old man afraid of spiders though, so he doesn’t represent my driving skill really well. Anyway, when I was first learning to drive in my mall’s parking lot (with my mom) at 9 a.m. (when there are absolutely no cars in the lot) I was terrified. As my mom continuously lectured me about staying focused, to never ever text and drive, and don't talk on the phone, I kept wondering how people do actually text and drive, because so much of your attention is being used to focus on driving. Gas pedal, brakes, rearview mirror, side mirrors, avoiding hitting wandering geese. And that’s just a few of the things I had to be aware of in the empty mall parking lot. Don’t even get me started on the highways. *shudder*

I’m not trying to scare anyone out of driving, because it really is awesome to be able to go places when you want to go places, not just when your parents are available. I’m simply telling you how hard it is, especially as a new teenager.

But I wasn’t aware of the consequences of texting and driving. But boy, did I learn about them in my required driving course. We watched videos about different accidents that real teenagers got into while texting and driving. These videos were graphic,  heartbreaking, and quite frankly, scary. One of the videos that has stuck with me is about this boy who was quarterback on his high school’s football team. He was loved by everyone at the school and was said to be super nice. This kid was driving a few of his friends when he started texting and driving. He crashed his car and everyone except himself died on impact. Not only can this guy no longer walk, but he has to live every day with the fact that he killed three of his best friends.

After viewing these videos I vowed to myself that I would not talk on the phone or text and drive. I can say with 100% certainty that I do not want to die, or hurt someone else, because I was texting & driving. I don’t want my last words to be digital. I don’t want my family to live in mourning because I was doing something as superficial as texting.

I know I’m being dramatic. I know I’m taking it to the extreme. And yes, I know I sound like your mother. But texting & driving is downright dumb. If you have something super important to say, then pull over. It’s that simple.

If you haven’t really read anything that I wrote above, then read this: don’t text and drive. It’s not worth it.

PS - Don't fret, I'm not really driving in the photo above! (; xox, chloe

Do you know anyone who texts and drives? Does it make you nervous?

My Passion: Photography

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe4 Comments
cute-wedding-photos-louisville.jpg

Hey there, it's Chloe! As those of you know who follow us on Instagram (wait, what... you haven't yet? Follow us here!) I have always loved photography. It’s something that I think is hereditary as my grandfather, uncle, and mom have a passion for it as well. All of us have different styles, though, so it’s really interesting to see who sees what. My mom likes nature, my grandfather likes to pose us for pictures, and my uncle takes incredible animal photos & his underwater photography is beyond amazing. When I was in seventh grade, I saved every single penny that I made from various babysitting jobs to buy a camera. Everyone thought I was crazy, but spending my own money to buy a fancy DSLR was a kick in the rear to start learning everything I could learn. At first I was super into nature photography and taking photos of everything up close, but recently I have been really getting into portrait photography. Maybe taking OOTD pictures of my mom has something to do with it ;)

I take a photography class with a local wedding photographer, Sarah Katherine Davis, who has been an fabulous teacher and mentor. She graciously invited me to shadow her at a few of her weddings to see if wedding photography would strike my fancy. And it did. Strike my fancy, that is. I’ve fallen in love with love, or at least capturing love. I figured I would showcase a few of my favorite snapshots that I’ve captured because I'm feeling inspired. Feel free to leave your critiques - I love to hear feedback!

teen blogger Caroline of Citrus & Style interview

Introducing another one of my teen blogger friends: Caroline of Citrus & Style. Caroline is probably one of the most chic teenagers I know, and I'm so lucky to call her a bloggy friend! I even know that she's super fabulous in real life too, because she is one of the few bloggers that I have actually met face to face. We actually met this past summer and totally hit it off! I know Caroline looks up to Mackenzie Horan from Design Darling (in fact, I think I spot a necklace from her shop on her in the photo), but to be honest, I think Caroline is a stylish version Mackenzie Horan because I - and other girls - really do look up to her! Caroline's blog, Citrus & Style, is the perfect mix of fashion and lifestyle, and you have to check out her effortlessly stylish instagram account (@citrusandstyle).

Sloane writes mostly fashion posts, but she also has a nice blend of travel and decor posts as well. I swear Sloane dresses better than most 20 year olds I know, and I’m totally jealous of some of her pieces - like her Chanel ballet flats and just look at those boots she has on! Can I have them both? ;) Sloane is a sweety so be sure to give her blog some love! {And before you leave, make sure you check out my post on Gracey at Stripes & Peonies - trust me, you’ll be in awe of her photos!}

FRIDAY.jpg

Here's what I'm loving lately, how about you -- any recommendations? I can't believe "IT's" already here, the highly anticipated college tour time. Yep, we are off to start visiting colleges this weekend for Chloe! So as we drive a lot and settle into hotels at night, we'd love to find some new tv shows, songs, Instagrams, etc.to while away the time. I'd love your suggestions. And be sure to have Happy Weekend, y'all!

Internet Loves Lately

{1} Listen: Passenger, Let Her Go. Just listen. And maybe try to a few of Passenger's others, like Holes & The Wrong Direction. That's all.

{2} Make:  I have serious craft crush. I mean, who doesn't love glitter, balloons, donuts, and pink. It's a cuteness explosion.

{3} Wear: I just can't get these booties out of my head. Or onto my feet. I'm accepting donations.

{4} LaughWarning - this is not a Pinterest account to read in a coffee shop! People will stare at you. Not at your computer, but at you, giggling & guffawing. I applaud a well-turned phrase. I admire thoughtful prose. I seek out wit like a moth to fine cashmere {without the munching and destruction}! And Quinoa in My Imaginary Well Dressed Toddler Daughter satisfies like no other. This board containts fashion + lovable snark and what you would think if you were insanely clever, well, maybe you are.  I'm not, so I read pins, and wait for the book.

{5} Watch Suits (I watch on Amazon)... the best tv show you probably aren't watching. Hot guys, smart gals, the best 1-liners on tv, and work clothes that almost make me want to go corporate. If I was forced to practice law again, I'd want to be Jessica from brain to toe. Make that from hair to pointed toe pump. And if you aren't subscribing to Amazon Prime, watching old episodes makes it totally worthwhile - ask me about it (no, they aren't paying me... but they should. Move over Netflix, your streaming just didn't compare.)

Happy weekend, y'all! I'm traveling to the Digital Family Summit this weekend in Baltimore to speak and can't wait to meet other teen bloggers! I'm excited to share my adventures with you; but before I go, here are my latest Internet Loves Lately... because I'm always looking for inspiration and it's always right at my fingertips.

Stay tuned to my Instagram to keep up with what's happening at #DigiFam this weekend! I'm keeping #1 below in mind and fingers crossed that it will all go well and I won't miss any flights, haha!

{1} This little quote is great motivation. Just be your best you and you’ll rock the world.

{2} A cute little pouch like this with a secret is the perfect accessory for any girl on the move or who leaves her bag in a sunny car. Cough *me* cough. All you do is pop the bag in the freezer and then when you’re ready just put your lipstick / makeup in the bag and you can carry it around without worrying if it will melt!

{3} Kate Loves Photography is my new favorite photographer - go see why!!!. I love how she can make the most simple thing look so chic! Also *sneak peak* she is our upcoming “girl crush” so get ready for an awesome interview.

{4} Um, Yum. During the fall and winter time all I want to do is eat sweets. Of course this cake will be in my “to-bake” list for this season.

{5} Can we just talk about how cute the mini pumpkins look lined across the mantle. So cute. This is a room I want to snuggle up in with a good book and a cup of tea.

How to Get Traffic to your Website from Instagram

All, BLOG TIPS, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe30 Comments
BLOGINSTAGRAM.jpg

how to get traffic from Instagram Once we published our Instagram tips & tricks, we received lots of questions about Instagram, but the 2 that stood out were (a) what's the best way to get traffic to your website from Instagram without using a contest or giveaway & (b) how do I get my blog post pictures on Instagram? Here you go... our quick and simple answers with our tips to make the most of your Instagram!

The best way to get traffic to your blog posts is pretty common sense (but here area a few reminders):

1. A “sneak peak” or teaser picture. These pictures give your followers an insider look of an upcoming post or you could be working behind the scenes on your post. The goal? Curiosity! The next day we posted the finished product that we created with the items below, but aren't you dying to know what we made with napkins?! {Hint: who says Halloween can't be pink & green!}

2. Highlighting your most popular posts from the week or month on Instagram. Your readers might have missed a craft, outfit, or story and will be intrigued and want to check them out.

3. Last but not least, simply be yourself and create compelling and cohesive Instagram content. Your Instagram feed should have a unique style - this is our #1 tip! Create your own look and stick with it, just like you have your voice on your blog, you have your "look" or style on Instagram. Don't you always want to see the blog when you love the Instagram account? I do!

Besides the fact that Instagram is a compelling way to tell a visual story of your brand, just remember that it's a window into your website.

The other question that we are asked is “how the heck do I get a picture from my camera onto Instagram?” A lot of people pride themselves for solely taking iPhone pictures; however, if you want show your high quality work from a camera, fantastic. But please, don't tell everyone you take iPhone pics when you’re really using your super fancy DSLR - in other words, don't use "#nofilter". Ok? Ok. So here's how you get those fancy pics to Instagram:

1. Once you upload your pictures to your computer from your camera:

  • Email the picture you want to upload to yourself.
  • Then, open the picture on your phone from your mail app.
  • From there, just click the picture in your email and it will ask you what you want to do.
  • I typically save to camera roll and then open it up in one of my editing apps (click for an for editing app tutorial).  OR if you don't use editing apps, open Instagram and it will be in your Camera Roll.

If the picture file is too big, you may need to take a screen shot of the picture on your computer or your phone. This takes two seconds so it’s not a big deal!

2. Another way to post a blog picture onto your Instagram is after you’ve posted your picture on your blog,

  • Open your website on your phone.
  • Then click the image you want to use and save to camera roll.
  • Again, you'll simply need to open up Instagram or an editing app to access the photo.

Although it's another step to take in your daily blogging routine, Instagram is a fabulous way to drive traffic to your website with a quick visual peek into what you are doing... and tease your readers just enough so that they will be dying to check out what the rest of your post is all about. And we've found it draws in readers with everything from fashion posts, to DIY, to random stuff.

And hey, are you following us on Instagram @popcosmo!?

There 'ya go! Instagram those blog posts & let us know if you have any questions.

"Girls Don't Poop"... say what?!

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe7 Comments
2013-10-03_20-45-40.jpeg

We never watch YouTube ads, especially gross ones and particularly one called "Girls don't Poop." Or do we? Well "never say never" because neither of us could stop watching this ad for Poo~Pourri. And I, for one, would have loved to have been in the room when brainstorming began for this campaign. And again when filming it. Can you imagine the laughter? When I asked Chloe if she had seen the poop video, she started cracking up. Hysterically. And then started repeating lines from it. That's when we knew we had to bring this video to you, just in case you're the 1 in 11 million who've hasn't seen it. Because it's a poop video too good to miss. Trust us.

The ad we watched - "Girls Don't Poop" but there are others! Watch the bloopers :) Hope you enjoyed, and maybe even giggled a bit and smiled a lot!

Perfectly Imperfect

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe12 Comments
perfectlyimperfect.jpg

Perfectly Imperfect Sometimes I feel as though I am not a real blogger. But what the heck is a real blogger anyway? I always thought it was someone who has a perfect life, a perfect closet, and an endless amount of ideas. But then I thought “who in the world is perfect?” Blake Lively, maybe, but besides her I honestly can’t think of anyone. I feel like a lot of bloggers that I read emit this sense that their life is a big fact shiny gold bubble of perfection.

I love the people whose blogs I read, but I know that deep down they must have bad days. Don't they sometimes feel like they don’t have any clothes, even though their closet is filled to the brim with them? Don't they sometimes burn their food, and in that case have nothing to Instagram? Then I could relate, because these things happen to me too. I am not perfect and nobody is. I just want to let you all know that I am not shaming anyone for making their life look like it’s filled with rainbows and unicorns, I’m just saying that sometimes it’s nice to know that rainbows do come after rain (especially the rain that ruins picture days) and unicorns do poop.

I am guilty of making my life seem better than it is. But I’m no longer going to hide the fact that sometimes I sit in my room on Friday nights reading John Green books for the second (or maybe third time). Or that I trip when I go for runs and cry harder over the fact that my phone just shattered rather than the fact that I’m bleeding. Or how I kill flowers right after I buy them from the store.

So I’m just preparing you for the fact that I am going to start sharing awkward / weird stories about myself on here. They might be sporadically or that might be back to back, it just depends on how particularly awkward I’m feeling.

So yeah, there’s your warning. So go on and be your perfectly imperfect self, just like the rest of us, contrary to popular belief.

  3. Free People’s Pinterest account has become my favorite. They post consistently and I absolutely love all of their re-pins and original pins. Definitely a must follow.
  4. Sh*t Bloggers Wear. Genius. That’s it. Pure genius. I always tell my mom that I don’t feel like a “real” blogger when I’m not wearing the latest “super awesome trendy thing” and then I step back and listen to how ridiculous I sound.
  5. My Kindle Fire is amazing. I think I might be addicted to watching seasons upon seasons of free series. Like seriously, it’s an issue.

I'm finally sharing my story... because you might know a teen just like me

EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe62 Comments
mystorypots.jpg

POTS awareness Some of y’all might know that I do online school. I think the thing that most people wonder, but rarely ask, is why the heck did you switch from regular school to online school?  Well, the answer is short: I was sick. And not a “dope” or “too cool for school” kind of sick, but a “I can’t get out of bed” kinda sick.  I have something called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome or POTS for short. It sounds scary, but I promise it’s not. I’m doing great now that I have a diagnosis.

But getting a diagnosis wasn't easy, because POTS isn't a well-known condition. I'm writing this post today because I want to spread the word about POTS and change that fact. I don’t want attention for myself, but I do want to draw attention to POTS because there isn't enough knowledge about it. So, on to my story, which is a common one among us POTS folks: I was sick for almost two whole years with mono-like symptoms. However, mono didn’t show up in my blood tests. In fact, nothing showed up in my blood tests, so nobody believed I was sick. Not even most of the countless (well, I sort of counted, it was around 15) doctors who examined me over 2 years. Almost all of them told me that I was simply “depressed” or “whatever is wrong with me is un-medical.” Two years of doctors telling me that my illness was all in my head got frustrating. Super, super frustrating. I started to believe I wasn’t sick - even though deep down I knew that I was - which was probably the worst part of all of it.

Thankfully, my parents never gave up searching for an answer to my mystery illness, even though doctors told them I was fine. They got me into Mayo Clinic which diagnosed me within the first 30 minutes of my first appointment (although I stayed there all week for tests to confirm it).

As I said, the reason I’m writing about my journey is (1) to spread the word about POTS and (2) to help other teen girls with POTS - boys too, but it occurs mostly in teen girls and pregnant women. I'd love to spare as many people as possible from wasting weeks, months, or, like me, years of their life questioning or doubting  their condition.

So if anyone (teens, younger or older) you know has the following symptoms, please let them know about POTS so they can talk to their doctor:

-racing heart -low grade fever -blue/purple legs when standing too long -extreme fatigue -headaches -fainting spells -stomach pains

These are just a few of the symptoms, but they change from person to person. I don’t want anyone to think I'm offering medical answers. What I am offering is a way to spread the word, to share my story to so others can read it and identify with it, or maybe open people’s eyes to some questions they might be able to ask their doctors who might not have had heard of POTS.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and for helping spread the word about POTS! If you have any questions, then feel free to leave a comment. I promise to read every single one of them!

Flirty v. Dirty

Flirty v Dirty It's my morning custom to cleanse my head from the day before and a ritualistic beginning to my new day. Running's always been my daily inspiration, my therapy, my happy place, my solitude, my weight watcher, my whatever I need it to be. No music is needed, I'm in my head hearing only my feet and seeing only my thoughts and the trees. "Mumble... mumble ____  your pussy," he yelled whizzing by on his bike, rudely interrupting my zen run. Yes, my ZEN run. Some wimpy #@hole on a bike had the audacity to interrupt my reverie and objectify me. Out loud. How dare he.

My first thought, after I impulsively flipped him off without breaking stride and without looking back, was, "Did I ask for this?" When guys have yelled lewd comments in the past, as stereotypical as it sounds, I wondered if it was my fault. So, you be the judge (I've already judged me, as I'm always apt to do). I have on a dark pink crew-neck Nike short sleeve workout tee and the ubiquitous Nike shorts in black with white stripes. I do not have on my Athleta bra, which is my most supportive, but I do have on a very supportive workout bra. I ban the bounce because I have a C/D chest, that would draw attention if bouncing, so I don't let it. And black shoes and white socks. Nothing spectacular, nothing worth scrutiny. I'm just jogging.

If bike-boy (I didn't see him, but he's not what I think of as a man) had simply thought the words in his head, he could have enjoyed his "fantasy" of whatever he was thinking of doing to my private parts, and I could have continued to enjoy my morning. I don't care what men or women do in their heads. It's our right and privilege to have a fantasy world. Not only can we have them, but we are expected to. Just ask Sports Illustrated or Kraft... without our fantasy world, I'm not so sure the Zesty Guy would have as many women swooning over him. Kraft took objectification and twisted it on his head: the Zesty Guy is laughing with us. We watch his commercials and giggle and swoon. There's nothing crude and nobody's using sleazy words to describe him, we're all playing along. Nicely. The issue arises when we cross that fine line between flirty and dirty.

But where is the line between flirty and dirty? My gut tells me. But, it's not always so clear. If bike-boy had yelled out "Hey beautiful" would I have been offended? Probably not. But what if he had yelled out, "Nice legs." My legs were showing, aren't too sexual, and the language isn't tawdry. Flirty or dirty? Simple language, but he's yelling at me from his bike while I'm running. Has he crossed a line? And if he'd said, "Nice breasts" or "Nice rack" I'd be offended, but what if I'd just gotten a boob job? Perhaps flirty and dirty are subjective not only from the yeller's standpoint, but also from the view of who's being yelled at. But I don't like strangers yelling at me. Period.

Does the flirty v. dirty line move as we age? Chloe, at 17, would be just as shocked by bike-boy's words. The line between flirty and dirty comes from parental and family influence and may waver back and forth at stages in our lives, but I imagine the point where each of us says "ick" remains fixed. And when it's crossed, we hurt and question... and maybe even blog about it.

So, back to my run... what's the point of yelling filthy comments to women? He wasn't trying to impress friends, à la the construction worker scenario. He obviously wasn't trying to pick me up. Did it make him feel better about something? I don't have an answer, but if you do, please let me know. I'm trying to understand, so I can react appropriately next time. My running / biking path is popular and I'm not changing my route because of 1 jerk, so I'm sure to encounter him again.  I'd like to learn how to deal with misogynistic jerks, and I should teach my daughter too. I believe she grasps her central point of "ick" and flirty v. dirty. Now she needs to master dealing with #@ holes without questioning herself and without flipping him off, because I don't ever want her to do the former and she's too clever to need to do the latter.

Thanks for reading my rant. I'd love your opinions and advice and to know how you react when in a similar situation. xo ~Kim

Internet Loves Lately

All, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe5 Comments

Hi there, it's Kim and it's my turn this week for my Internet Loves Lately. Speaking of loves, it's my anniversary this weekend! An amazing 23 years ago, hubbie and I walked down that aisle to say, "I do" and although we have some wear and tear on us, we are still celebrating and will spend this weekend reminiscing, romancing, and running (our favorite thing to do together). That is, if he's feeling up to it - an injury has kept him on the sidelines for a few months, but here's hoping! And it's also the end of summer with Labor Day upon us. I'm definitely not celebrating the end of lazy days, although I do love a good schedule to make me feel productive and nothing gets me on schedule like kids in school. But this week's Internet Loves are all about what reminds me of summer as it slowly and stickily winds down.

What are you not quite ready to say good-bye to this summer?

Popcosmo | internet loves lately 8.30

{1} Ice Cream Sundae Pops Ice cream IS summer! Are these not the bomb? The absolute cherry on top? Better than any ice cream truck treat, but would have the kids running in from wherever they are!

{2} Purse So I have a purse and shoe fetish. And this mint green color makes me think of summer because of its adorable pastel shade. But there is nothing cutesy about it, it's pure lady and all glamour, especially since it's handmade, customizable, and from Paris by La Contrie. Bring on the heat.

{3} Surfboard Obviously the beach is the ultimate summer get-away, but if it's not in the cards, how about propping up a sparkly surfboard in a corner? This sparkly DIY project could take me away for few hours. Sort of. It would definitely get me in the beach party vibe every time I looked at it!

{4} Confetti Balloons Who doesn't love a balloon... a giant balloon? Doesn't it just make you think of little kids running around, or big ones smiling and skipping and having an outdoor party? That sounds like a summery good time to me, although if you want to hand me a giant confetti-filled balloon anytime of the year, I'll probably definitely take it!

{5} Cocktail Pops One or two or three bites of these say, "It's 5 o'clock somewhere!" And they'll cool you off. Have I mentioned how hot it is here?
