my college essay

CollegeChloe Gordon5 Comments

One of the hardest parts of the college application process is writing the essay. THE essay of your life. The essay that, in merely 500 words, describes you, your personality, and your life. I can’t even begin to tell you how many drafts of my essay I have. All of which are completely different, might I add. Because I’m going to college this coming fall (have I mentioned I’m going to college this coming fall??), I decided that I would share my college essay. Not because I think it’s amazingly well written and creatively processed, but because I think it would have been nice to see other people’s essays before I wrote mine. I was so desperately in need of seeing what an actual college application essay looked like, but to no avail. So if you’re a rising senior in high school and currently creating drafts upon drafts of essays, I’m your heavenly angel from above sending you an ounce of love by showing you mine.

But no judgements allowed, thank you. Unless it's a good kind of judgement.

Anyway, here’s my essay:

My high school career has been one for the books; some might view it as a failure, but I choose to view it as taking the unconventional path. Five years, three high schools, two cities. Maybe unconventional is an understatement. I had never imagined my life to be so… different, but sometimes different is a good thing. Being different has allowed me to see the world from a new perspective. It has allowed me to better understand new situations in my life and around the world. I have become more open minded due to my “failure” to have a “normal” high school career.

Before my high school years became so weird, for lack of better word, I was stubborn. I thought that the world revolved around me, and I didn't think that anything could bring me down. I was fearless, and stupidly naive. Then I became ill with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). And the world changed. It didn’t change for the worse, but it changed, and it became this completely new place… I started to see people differently; I became more understanding, patient, and open minded. I was also to discover my love for graphic design and photography. So maybe I “failed” to stay healthy, but in my mind I won.

But what even is failing? Sure, I can look in the dictionary and find that it means “a weakness or a shortcoming,” but what does it really mean? It might mean that you can’t do something that everyone else can do, but the word fails (pun intended) to mention what you can do. For example, one might fail to follow a juice cleanse, but maybe this same girl discovered her love for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in the process. The word failure, to me, is a huge fail within itself.

No, my high school education isn’t “normal.” Yes, I am “different.” But I feel like this difference makes me, well, me. This so called failure has opened my eyes to a different world.  A world where every person has a story that should be heard, a world where positivity is important, a world where I can be myself without worrying about what other people think. Becoming ill created, what felt like, an insurmountable road block and caused me to take a detour to a different path, but this path has Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and graphic design. So tell me, who failed?

So maybe I’m crazy for sharing my college essay with the world, but what the heck. If your essay is available for reading, please let me know because I’d love to read it!

Thanks for reading!

pre-college is hard

CollegeChloe Gordon1 Comment

College is a topic that I haven’t really talked about on here. I don’t know why I’ve shied away from actually talking about it, but I think it’s mainly because I have absolutely no idea what college entails. I mean yeah, I’ve seen movies about it, read books about it, met my parents college roommates, etc. But, I’m the oldest kid in my family so I don’t really have a brother or sister’s experience to learn from. And quite honestly, I feel like I’m going in blind.

Applying for college was way easier than the stage I’m in now. Sending in final transcripts, enrolling in classes, finding a roommate, figuring out housing and meal plans, finding a time to buy stuff to decorate my dorm room, and deciding what to take to school and what to leave home. It’s all so stressful. In fact, it’s so stressful to think about that I’ve been avoiding thinking about it all together. I mean, I’m doing what I need to do but I’m trying to keep most of it out of m brain completely. College is weird, I’m telling you.

I’ve decided to compile a list of helpful websites that I’ll eventually get down to studying/cramming in my brain. But for now, I’m just enjoying the sweet, sweet summertime before I need to start really worrying about what comes after the daunting world of college. And if college is daunting, I can only imagine what adjective there is to describe the after college experience. Ya feel?

A Compilation of Guides for the Unaware Upcoming College Freshie
for decorating my dorm room like a boss
8 week guide from move in
15 dorm room essentials
ultimate college packing list / another awesome packing list
a personal reflection of a first year in college
how to get along with your roommate
things you didn’t know you would need in college
some freaky and weird hacks for college…
advice for college students
first day of classes guide

There you have it, a guide of multiple guides to college help. Does that even make sense? No? Ok, whatever, I’m still keeping that sentence in. I hope this helped you out, and I will certainly be writing all about my college experience once it happens. But for now, I’m going to continue to not worry about it.

Graduation is right around the corner.. It’s such a bittersweet time of the year. On one hand, I am done with the first chapter of my life and get to start a new awesome college filled chapter, but on the other hand, I have to say goodbye to everything I’ve known for the first 19 years of my life. It’s weird. But because graduation is coming up, so are graduation parties. I’m starting to brainstorm what I want to get my friends so I decided I’d share some of my thoughts with you all in cause you’re wondering what you should get a friend, daughter, niece, or etc.

Stella and Dot necklace What’s a better way to remember all your high school memories than wearing something around your neck and close to your heart. A cute and dainty necklace can be worn at all times, with any outfit, and is the perfect thing to take to college to remember everything great about high school.

Dormify pillow Having a cozy bedroom is so important in college, so give your friend/grad a pillow to help jumpstart the dorm decorating process. Dormify has millions of cute pillows to choose from that match tons of different personalities and styles. You’re guaranteed to find the perfect match.

bando agenda College is a busy and stressful time, but having a cute agenda fixes all of those problems. Your grad will love this agenda and will be eternally thankful for it when she’s stressed out next year!

urban outfitters tote bag A cute tote bag is definitely a necessity. Your grad is inevitably going to be lugging around books, papers, and her computer around campus so make sure she looks great when strutting around campus.

jcrew night gown College is essentially a big sleepover, so a great set of PJs are definitely in order. This J.Crew nightgown is not one to miss out on!

rifle paper co. grad card Of course, money is always a great option. Or a gift card, preferably Starbucks. But if you do go the money/gift card route, be sure to put it in an adorable card! Nothing’s better than good stationary.

What are you buying for your grad?
If you're a grad, what do you wish to receive?

New York (internship) is always a good idea

College, EXTRAS, RANDOM STUFFKim & Chloe7 Comments

new york is always a good idea Whew! I just started my internship for Dormify a few days ago and it’s been a whirlwind of excitement, nerves, and new experiences. When I got the news in April that I had been accepted for the internship I was amazed, and knew that it would be a great experience. I was 90% excited and 10% nervous about things like figuring out how to get to work (I've visited New York, but never lived here!), how many people would I be working with, what would I do all day, where were the other interns from, and... could I really do this??

Well, I'm happy to say that all my questions are answered and that even though I just started, I am already obsessed with the whole company. It’s girls only (#girlboss) so the work environment is more fun than I could have imagined. Think great music blasting, chatting about which color and style RayBans are the best, and talking all things creative. Really, it’s that fun.

But, like any job, it is a lot of work, which I love. On the first day I was busy from 10am until 7pm. I spent half of the day researching for upcoming projects and then the other half of the day styling and shooting new products for a super cute desk setting. There’s a sneak peek on Instagram, so be sure to follow us (@popcosmo).

One thing that I was most nervous about my internship was, of course, what to wear. I definitely love more simple and casual clothes, so I’m happy to report that jeans and cute tees are 100% welcome in my office. Woo! I didn’t actually bring that many clothes because I wanted to see what the other girls wore in the office and then go shopping. I mean hello, how could I not go on a major shopping spree while in NYC?

I’ll keep you posted on the internship, but be sure to follow us on Instagram for behind the scenes fun!

What are your summer plans? Are you interning, if so, where?

My favorite Graduation Cards

College, EXTRASKim & Chloe3 Comments

The end of the school year is always my favorite part of the year. The weather is warm but not too warm, everyone seems to be in good spirits, and there are so many parties to be thrown. While I don’t graduate until next year, I’ve already been trying to come up with graduation card ideas since I'm scheming how awesome my graduation party will be. I want there to be good food, great friends, and the perfect ambiance. I believe the first thing that is super important to set the feel of a party is the invitation. It lets everyone know the type of party to expect and sets the whole mood for the afternoon or evening. We ordered our business cards from Minted but they have so much more! Their cards are fabulous! There are tons of different options and you can customize the colors and shapes on some of the cards. Seriously, wow!

I know I don’t graduate until next year, but I guess the senioritis has already set in a little bit ;)  At least Minted has given me tons of Graduation card ideas and I can dream about it for a while.

Below are a few of my favorite cards... let me know what you think of them in the comments below!

Chloe Takes NYC

College, EXTRASKim & Chloe12 Comments

Today I have some super (super, super, super) exciting news! Guess where I’ll be spending a good chunk of my summer? (uh, if you read the title, you already know, but I like guessing games)

But if you just jumped in and started reading, are you ready to know?!

NYC

NYC! Yep, the good 'ole city of dreams, magic and inspiration, and also the land of my dad's family (and accents) and my favorite breakfast (bagels and lox). I will be interning for an amazing company called Dormify. I can't wait to meet the nicest people I've met on Skype and through emails, who I know I'll learn tons from about PR, marketing, product placement, photo styling and more.  Dormify has the cutest dorm room decorations and accessories, and I am seriously thrilled to be a part of such an inspiring team.

Summer can’t come fast enough. Aaah! Just thinking about it is putting a huge smile on my face and is making me so excited that I'm almost forgetting about all the exams and tests that stand between me and my dream internship. I can’t wait to share my entire experience with y’all which I know for a fact will include a lot of “photo essay” posts where I share a whole bunch of photos from the amazing inspiration that NYC holds.
